Demetrius Murphy: Life and Business in Context

Season 1 Episode 17

Prior to starting grad school, Demetrius Murphy looked like he'd followed a fairly traditional path from a Management Consulting major to Advisory Services at PwC. But at no point was his path conventional. Rather, the right word might be contextual. Demetrius always viewed his dreams and options through the context of his whole life, not just his school or work life. And, as is often the case, the threads for where he is now were woven throughout his story right from the beginning. As a sociology PhD student now, he's still very interested in business, but his interests lie primarily in issues and ideas that, frankly, weren't part of his business education. He's clear that his business degree prepared him well for corporate America, but he's looking to prepare corporate America for more. Don't miss this conversation. It will make you think AND feel.

Demetrius's recommendations:
The Death of Ivan Ilyich - a novella by Leo Tolstoy
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe- you may have read it in high school but it's worth a reread with a little more life experience under your belt.
In the interest of time, I had to cut out Demetrius's what to watch recommendations but put these on your list: Watchmen, Lovecraft Country, & Industry (on HBO and about IBanking).

I've referenced these a couple times as a great resource but if you want to see what a plan of study looks like, check it out here. You can adapt it for any major or any school.
